Why You Can’t Rush Success Giorgio Armani - Life Begins at 40
Giorgio Armani was pursuing a career in medicine before being captivated by fashion.
When his military service ended, Armani dropped out of university to pursue a career in fashion, He went on to join a garments shop, La Rinascente, where he assisted the photographer and helped in arranging the window. This was where he remained for seven years and got the required exposure to the textile business, fashion designing and marketing, after being promoted as sales person for the men’s section.
However, it wasn’t until Sergio Galeotti encouraged Armani to pursue freelance design work that the two became business partners. In July 1975, Giorgio Armani S.P.A was founded. The company’s first collection—a men’s clothing line—debuted when Armani was 42 years old. Today, Armani’s brand can be found in major department stores around the world along with 500 exclusive retail stores.
By the end of the 1990s, Armani had over 200 stores worldwide and annual sales of roughly $2 billion. In 2005, Armani debuted his first haute couture line. He launched this high-end venture because he liked the challenge. "Think how liberating it is for a designer to make one dress, perfectly, to satisfy only one customer," he told In Style magazine.
Hotels have become Armani's latest venture. In 2010, he opened his first hotel in Dubai, and another one is expected to open in Milan. It seems that Armani has nearly tapped into every available design opportunity at this point in his career.
Real success is a process and cannot be produced overnight.
YOU CANT RUSH SUCCESS!
Dont take shortcuts. If you want to be true to your beliefs and who you are, then shortcuts do not exist. When you rush the development process in your career, you miss the opportunity to allow your character to develop. It takes time to learn on how to make decisions and resolve conflicts. When you get something too soon or that you didnt work for, you wont know how to value or maintain it. And there is nothing in this world worth giving up what you believe in. Go through the development process in your career, as difficult as it is because in the long run, it will work out and your success will be much greater.
Giorgio Armani has proven his weight in the business of design in all its aspects. His start may have come late, but his success is evidence that inspiration can come at any point in one’s life, and success is all a matter of putting that spark to consistent, well-worn work.
Despite his great success, Armani remains modest about his efforts. "I like the idea of having built this beautiful empire, but I still like to think of myself as the stable boy," he told WWD.
